Access to Student Records

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974, as amended, was designated to protect the privacy of education records, to establish the right of students to inspect and review their education records, and to provide guidelines for the correction of inaccurate or misleading data through informal and formal hearings. Students also have the right to file complaints with the FERPA office about alleged failures by the institution to comply with the Act.

UAA may release, without consent, certain directory information (name, major, dates of attendance and credentials awarded). No one outside the institution shall have access to, nor will the institution disclose any other information from a student’s education record, without the written consent of the student, except to personnel within the institution on a need-to-know basis, to officials of other institutions in which a student seeks to enroll, to persons in compliance with a judicial order, and to persons in an emergency in order to protect the health or safety of the student or other persons, or as otherwise permitted under the Act. Exceptions to the above policy are as follows:

Academic Advising

An academic advisor can assist students as they decide on an educational goal, choose courses for the upcoming semester, and make a degree plan.  Advisors can also educate students about academic policies and procedures.   Students who need advising should call Academic Counselor, Barbara Brown at 907/486-1211 to make an appointment.

Accreditation

Kodiak College is a community campus of the University of Alaska Anchorage and is fully accredited by the Commission of Colleges of Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges. Credits earned at Kodiak College are University of Alaska credits.

Attendance

Regular attendance and active participation are expected in all classes. Students are responsible for coursework even if there are legitimate reasons for an absence. For semester-length classes, a faculty member may drop a student from a course if the student fails to attend class by the first class meeting of the second full week of classes.

Auditing Classes

Students registering for audit (AU) pay the same tuition and fees as students taking the course for credit. Changes from audit to credit must be made by September 18, and credit to audit status must be made by November 27 for semester length classes. No credit toward graduation will be earned by audited courses.

Credit/No Credit Grading Option

Credit/No Credit is a grading option that allows students to explore areas of interest when an academic grade is not desired. The option can be used only for undergraduate elective courses and must be indicated before the second week of the semester for semester length classes. Only grades of C or better receive a “CR” on the transcript. Grades of D or F appear as “NC,” a non-punitive grade. Students should request a Credit/No Credit form at the time of registration.

Dropping/Adding

It is the student’s responsibility to officially drop from a course; however, instructors have the option of initiating a withdrawal for those students who fail to meet attendance requirements. Add/Drop forms are available at Student Services in the Campus Center. Any semester-length course dropped before the end of the second week of the semester (September 18) will not appear on the student transcript. Semester-length courses dropped after that date will appear on the transcript with a grade of “W” for withdrawal. For semester length courses, this action can be processed up to the end of the twelfth week of the semester (November 27).

Dual Credit for High School Students

A variety of classes offered at Kodiak High School can be taken for both high school and college credit. The courses are taught by approved teachers/faculty at the local high school. Student who take the courses taught by KHS faculty are required to pay a small recording fee, which is currently $40.00 per course. A list of courses eligible for dual credit will be available at the High School Office or at the College at the beginning of the school year. Students enrolled in this program will complete Kodiak College registration forms in their high school classrooms.

The Dual Credit Program is an incredible service to students and parents because students may enroll in any dual credit course for a mere $40.00 fee. If the dual credit course appears on the student’s college transcript as a three credit course, the family has saved over $250.00 in tuition! Please contact the KHS Counseling Center, 907/481-2559 or the Kodiak College Registrar at 907/486-1235 for more information. Your children may already be taking these courses, so don’t pass up the opportunity for them to earn inexpensive college credit as well!

Financial Aid

Kodiak College offers financial aid and scholarship application educational presentations during each semester. At these information sessions, students will learn about how to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and how to compile a winning scholarship application. Please call Sue Thompson at 907/486-1214 for more information.

Grades

Grades for Fall 2006 semester will be available starting December 22, 2006. Students will not receive a paper copy of their grades in the mail. Grades can be accessed and printed from www.uaonline.alaska.edu.

Office Instruction Lab

The office instruction Lab offers many different CIOS (Computer Information and Office Systems) courses to students. Courses are self paced and flexible. A state-of-the-art computer lab is available for student use and a knowledgeable instructor is available 6-7 days a week for consultation and/or assistance. Students may enroll in the one-credit lab courses any time during the first 10 weeks of the semester and progress at their own pace. This is a great alternative for those with a busy lifestyle.

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society

Kodiak College students who meet the requirements are invited to become members of Phi Theta Kappa, Beta Epsilon Lambda Chapter, the national honor society for two-year colleges. Eligibility requirements include a minimum of twelve (12) Kodiak College credits with an overall grade point average of 3.5. If you are eligible and wish more information, please contact Chapter advisor Mark Schreiter at 907/486-1227.

Prerequisites

Students are responsible for making sure prerequisites have been met. Prerequisites are listed with each course description available in the Course Schedule or the Kodiak College Catalog. If a student has not taken and passed the necessary prerequisites, but feels confident of his or her ability to complete the coursework, the students may request permission from the instructor to enroll.  An instructor withdrawal may be initiated for those students who enroll without either prerequisites or instructor permission.

Schedule Changes

Changes, additions, and deletions to the course schedule with have occurred since publication will be published on the Kodiak College website at www.koc.alaska.edu  Courses are subject to change without notice.

Secondary School Students

High school aged students must complete a Secondary School Student Enrollment form and obtain the necessary signatures prior to registration in Kodiak College classes. Adult students will be given enrollment priority in classes of limited size. Secondary school students will be dropped from these classes, if necessary, to accommodate Kodiak College certification degree-seeking students.

Senior Citizen Tuition Wavers

The Senior Citizen Tuition Waver process is being restructured based on Board of Regents change in policy. Implementation for this policy will be posted as soon as it is defined. Individuals who were eligible for Senior Citizen Tuition Wavers on or before September 21, 2005, under the previous policy will continue to be eligible for the waiver. Regular tuition shall be waived for senior Alaskan residents on a space available basis, that is, when courses can accommodate such students in addition to other enrolled students.
