Frequently Asked Questions about Distance Education
What is distance education?
Courses offered by a variety of delivery methods including:
- Audio-conference – listening to a class on the phone; students must be available during scheduled class hours
- Satellite – watching a class on TV and being able to interact over the phone simultaneously; students must be available during scheduled class hours
- Web-based – interaction involves use of Blackboard, a web-based teaching tool, and e-mail; must have access to a computer and internet connection
- Correspondence – course materials and assignments are exchanged by mail
- Interactive Video – two-way radio transmissions to/from multiple sites
How do I find a course to take via distance education?
- Use the Distributed Education Gateway, a database that lists all the distance courses and programs offered in the University of Alaska System
- Go to www.distance.alaska.edu to get to the Distributed Education Gateway
- Select “Find Courses” on the Distributed Education Gateway home page to look at courses offered through any of the major academic units in the state (UAA, UAF or UAS) and their satellite campuses
Am I allowed to take distance education courses from other UA system campuses?
- If you are admitted to Kodiak College or any other UA System school, you may take distance education courses from any UA school, as long as the class does not have restricted enrollment
How do I find out if a degree program I am interested in is offered via distance education?
- Choose “Degree Programs” on the Distributed Education Gateway home page to find all the programs available via distance through the University of Alaska System
