April Laktonen Counceller, Ph.D
April Laktonen Counceller, Ph.D., also known as Isiik, is an Assistant Professor of Alaska Native Studies, and the Activity Director for the Title III Alutiiq Studies and Student Support project. She teaches courses in Alutiiq Language and Alaska Native Studies, and is also available as an advisor and mentor to Native and Alutiiq Studies students.
Dr. Counceller is an enrolled tribal member of the Sun'aq Tribe of Kodiak, and resides in Kodiak, AK. Her family is originally from the village of Larsen Bay. She received her B.A. in Anthropology and American Civilization from Brown University in 2002, her M.A. in Rural Development from University of Alaska, Fairbanks, in 2005, and her Ph.D. in 2010 from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks Interdisciplinary Program in Language Planning and Indigenous Knowledge Systems. She serves as a board member for the Alutiiq Museum & Archaeological Repository and Koniag, Inc. and sits on the Alaska Native Language Preservation & Advisory Council.
