Kodiak College Proudly presents the Artist of the Month

In recognition of the many talented artists whose lives have been touched by Kodiak and its environs, Kodiak College presents a changing gallery of work that celebrates the history, culture, beauty and diversity of the island and its people.

October 2006 Edition

Helm Johnson

Influences: I grew up on Kodiak Island and am now raising my kids here.  I have always been close to the rhythms of the land.  I spent much of my youth outdoors: hiking, riding bikes, fishing, skipping stones and walking beaches.  My artwork is how I honor my connection to this place.

My father taught me to weld at age 6.  Later my step-father encouraged me to work in the family construction business from age 12.  My metal working skills have grown over the years as I studied auto body refinishing and worked as a welder and metal fabricator in many capacities.

Before I became an artist, my mother ran the Alutiiq Museum gift shop, when it first opened.  I was exposed to many artists, who often stayed with our family.  My mother coordinated the first jewelry class I took.  My introduction to Hopi silver overlay jewelry led me to use my skills for art.  Her appreciation of fine art has strongly influenced my development.

I am further influenced by my wife Alisha, who is Alutiiq.   She has supported my artwork and helped market it within our community.  She encourages me to work with traditional Native imagery.   Her passion for the Alutiiq culture is a daily influence on what I create.
